to move:

That the House:

(1)

recognises that the Central Queensland Military and Artefacts Museum was established in 1999 with 90 items, but that the museum has grown to become a substantial public museum with a collection of some 37,000 items;

(2)

notes that the lease on the museum’s present premises has expired, thus throwing the future of this significant institution into doubt;

(3)

recognises that the Archer Street Barracks in Rockhampton is no longer needed by the Australian Defence Force and that the barracks would make an ideal site for the Central Queensland Military and Artefacts Museum; and

(4)

calls on the Minister for Finance and Administration to transfer the barracks to the Central Queensland Military and Artefacts Museum at no cost, subject to the museum committing to:

(a)

taking full responsibility for the maintenance and upkeep of the land and structures, both existing and in future;

(b)

never selling any more than half of the land area and, if any of the land area is sold, using the funds obtained only to finance the maintenance or expansion of the museum; and

(c)

the land and buildings being returned to the Commonwealth at no cost if the museum ceases to operate.
