In the last couple of days there have been representatives of the Qantas Engineers Alliance visiting Parliament House. This is made up of members of the Qantas heavy maintenance engineering workshops at several locations in Australia. They are at present under some threat, with the prospect, via a Qantas review, of one or even two of these workshops being closed with prospective job losses.
These are members of the Electrical Trades Union, the Australian Workers Union and the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union, and I share their concern that we need to have a strong future for aircraft maintenance in Australia. The alliance has called on Qantas to guarantee that the heavy maintenance of the A380 and the B787 fleet will be carried out in Australia.
