I am pleased to speak about my contribution to address one of the largest health issues in Durack: mental health. Last week, I announced that the Mid West Mental Health Service will have a suicide prevention trial. Mental health, especially suicide rates, across the country, particularly in regional and rural Australia, is a growing concern for me, and I am pleased that there will be a suicide prevention trial in the Mid West.
Following consultation with the community, the WA Primary Care Health Network will run the suicide prevention trail site and target the trial specifically to the needs and demands of the mid-west in WA. The targeted suicide prevention trial site illustrates that, as the federal member for Durack, I am listening to the needs of my constituents and not just adapting a model that does not suit Durack. This follows on from the work that we are doing in other parts of my electorate, namely the Kimberley. Earlier this month, I joined Minister for Indigenous Health Ken Wyatt at the working group meeting in Broome, which is the next step in planning for the suicide prevention trial in the Kimberley.
I want to take this opportunity to thank all the members of the working group in the Kimberley who are indeed our eyes and ears in the Kimberley.
