Young Australians suffering from mental health problems is an issue that I care about. Suicide is the leading cause of death for Australians aged between five and 17. This is not acceptable and we must do what we can to stop this tragedy. Last week, I had the privilege of launching the Way Back Support Service at Redcliffe Hospital. Up to one-quarter of those who attempt suicide will try again within three months of leaving hospital. The Way Back Support Service is critical during this three-month time frame and addresses a significant gap in the current service system. The coalition government has funded $800,000 towards this service, with plans to roll this out into other parts of the country. The service is free and is offered to all people, regardless of circumstance.
It saddens me to know that people die due to suicide. While I haven't been exposed to mental health issues in my immediate family, I personally know people who are affected. I want to thank beyondblue for designing the program and all the amazing and specialised staff at Redcliffe Hospital and other service providers who will implement this service to those most in need of our help.
