Kareela is one of the wonderful suburbs that I'm proud to represent here in parliament. I'd like to inform the House that this coming Saturday, 18 August, at 10 am at Kareela Village there will be the launch of Kareela: Lucky & Liveable, a book by Elizabeth Adams about Kareela's history. To give the House some background on the book: the unique history of Kareela was written by professional historian, Kareela resident and Sutherland Shire Historical Society member Elizabeth Adams. This is the first time a comprehensive history of the suburb of Kareela has been published. Kareela was originally thought to be named after an Aboriginal word meaning 'place of trees and water' or 'south wind', and was originally known as Sylvan Headland. The book will actually celebrate 50 years since the suburb was renamed by the Geographical Names Board. Although the area was first settled in the mid-1800s, significant settlement did not occur until 1962. I am very much looking forward to attending the book launch, and I recommend that all my colleagues in the House purchase a copy.
