by leave—In the lower house, the coalition moved two amendments to require the minister to seek recommendations for the appointment of commissioners from the fishing industry and also to require that the CEO may not be appointed as chairperson and must not otherwise hold office as a part-time commissioner of the new commission. Both of those amendments, I think, would have improved the Fisheries Legislation Amendment (New Governance Arrangements for the Australian Fisheries Management Authority and Other Matters) Bill 2008. Unfortunately, they did not receive the support of the government here. The Senate could, of course, in this fortnight have insisted on those amendments, but because there is some urgency in getting the bill adopted the coalition has agreed not to pursue those amendments.
Question agreed to.
Bill read a second time.
