The government's own Harper review recommended an effects test. This effects test is a change to legislation that will help make a more level playing field in terms of competition policy in this country. It is about standing up for small businesses and farmers against potential abuses of market power by big business. This has long been sought after by a number of stakeholders across this country. I note that Minister Barnaby Joyce said to the media yesterday in relation to the change of prime ministers that he wanted the National Party to be taken seriously by the Liberal government. This is an opportunity for the National Party to be taken seriously and to stand up for what they believe in, in this chamber—cross the floor and vote with the Greens and other parties to support an effects test.
