I am pleased that the opposition is supporting the Environment and Heritage Legislation Amendment (Antarctic Seals and Other Measures) Bill 2006. This legislation significantly strengthens the government’s protection of the Antarctic environment by incorporating the provisions of the seals regulations into the Antarctic Treaty (Environment Protection) Act by giving effect to an Antarctic Treaty measure prohibiting the collection of meteorites and rocks and revising penalties throughout the act to bring them into line with other similar environmental legislation. It is legislation that I understand entirely and I commend it to the Senate.
