SELECTION OF BILLS COMMITTEE
REPORT NO. 15 OF 2008
- (1)
- The committee met in private session on Thursday, 13 November 2008 at 1.33 pm.
- (2)
- The committee resolved to recommend—That—
- (a)
- the provisions of the Corporations Amendment (Short Selling) Bill 2008 be referred immediately to the Economics Committee for inquiry and report by 27 November 2008; and
- (b)
- the Plebiscite for an Australian Republic Bill 2008 be referred immediately to the Finance and Public Administration Committee for inquiry and report by 10 March 2009 (see appendix 1 for a statement of reasons for referral).
- (3)
- The committee resolved to recommend—That the following bills not be referred to committees:
- Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority Bill 2008
- Renewable Energy Amendment (Feed-in-Tariff for Electricity) Bill 2008
- Social Security and Other Legislation Amendment (Economic Security Strategy) Bill 2008.
The committee recommends accordingly.

- The committee deferred consideration of the Tax Agent Services Bill 2008 to its next meeting.

Plebiscite for an Australian Republic Bill 2008
Reasons for referral/principal issues for consideration:
The issue of Australia becoming a republic is an extremely important one for the Australian Parliament and public. It is important that the process by which this issue is progressed now has appropriate public input and is properly scrutinised and debated.
