I just reiterate what I indicated in my second reading speech: we on this side do have a longstanding and demonstrated commitment to ensuring Australia’s counterterrorism laws contain adequate safeguards and fulsome review mechanisms.

I note Senator Brandis snorting over there. I would like to remind him to read the history of his government on this issue. I indicated also that the government will continue this longstanding and demonstrated commitment by bringing forward a comprehensive response to the proposal for an independent review of counterterrorism laws and other review recommendations in the near future. We are not supportive of this bill, for the reasons that I outlined in the second reading speech.
