Business
Rearrangement

Mitch Fifield (Victoria, Liberal Party, Manager of Government Business in the Senate) Share this | Link to this | Hansard source
by leave—I want to indicate to the chamber that the government has just received a request for the Migration Amendment (Charging for a Migration Outcome) Bill 2015, which is before us, to be postponed to a later hour to enable further discussions to occur. I indicate to colleagues that this has a request that has just come in, so there has not been an opportunity to advise colleagues previously of this. That being the case, I move:
That consideration of the Migration Amendment (Charging for a Migration Outcome) Bill 2015 be postponed to a later hour.

Given what happened yesterday in regard to proceedings concerning the amendments to the Migration Amendment (Charging for a Migration Outcome) Bill, I should try to explain briefly that my understanding is that the government and the opposition may have the opportunity to reach agreement around the last amendment, which concerns coercion and criminal offences, which I moved yesterday and is still live. There needs to be a further opportunity to discuss the matter. As a consequence, I support the postponement of this item of business to a later hour this day.
