At the request of Senators Bilyk and Dean Smith, I move:
That the Senate—
(a) notes that during the week of 22 to 29 November 2020 the Ukrainian community in Australia commemorated the 87th anniversary of the Ukrainian famine of 1932-1933, known as Holodomor;
(b) further notes that it is estimated that up to 7 million Ukrainians died of starvation, caused by the deliberate actions of Joseph Stalin's Communist Government of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR);
(c) encourages members and senators to support the efforts of the Ukrainian community in Australia to raise awareness of Holodomor;
(d) extends its deepest sympathies to the victims and survivors of this tragedy and their families, in particular those currently living in Australia; and
(e) expresses its support for Ukraine's sovereignty and independence, and the efforts of the people of Ukraine to build a free and prosperous nation which respects and upholds the principles of democracy and human rights.
Question agreed to.
