Personal Explanations

I seek to make a personal explanation.

Does the member claim to have been misrepresented?
Bill Shorten (Maribyrnong, Australian Labor Party, Leader of the Opposition) Share this | Link to this | Hansard source
Most certainly.
Mrs Bronwyn Bishop (Speaker) Share this | Link to this | Hansard source
Most grievously. The member has the call.

Today during question time the Prime Minister asserted I said across the table that Australians would find out about our cuts when we came to government. I said no such thing. We oppose the Prime Minister's unfair budget and his cruel cuts.
Christopher Pyne (Sturt, Liberal Party, Leader of the House) Share this | Link to this | Hansard source
I rise on a point of order. It is not in order for the Leader of the Opposition to tell a bald-faced lie to the chamber in the way that he has just done. I heard him say, 'You will find out about our cuts when we come to government; you will find out when we come to government.' A personal explanation should not be used to mislead and lie to the parliament.
Anthony Albanese (Grayndler, Australian Labor Party, Shadow Minister for Infrastructure and Transport) Share this | Link to this | Hansard source
Madam Speaker, on the point of order: the member should withdraw the statement that he just made about the Leader of the Opposition.

He did not use unparliamentary language. You can object to it.
An opposition member: Yes, he did!
No, the unparliamentary language is when we use the term to describe the person.
Anthony Albanese (Grayndler, Australian Labor Party, Shadow Minister for Infrastructure and Transport) Share this | Link to this | Hansard source
And he did just that, Madam Speaker.
Mrs Bronwyn Bishop (Speaker) Share this | Link to this | Hansard source
No, he did not. But, if the Leader of the Opposition wishes to clarify his position, he may do so.
Christopher Pyne (Sturt, Liberal Party, Leader of the House) Share this | Link to this | Hansard source
Further to the debate, the Leader of the Opposition is relying on the hope that the cameras or the audio did not pick up his statement. I would ask you to check the audio and the cameras to see if the Leader of the Opposition has just used the facility about misrepresentation quite out of order.

I will undertake to take a look at the tape.
