Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water; Order for the Production of Documents

On behalf of Senator Thorpe, I move:

That the Senate-

(a) notes that:

(i) on 28 February 2024, order for the production of documents no. 481 was agreed by the Senate, requiring the Minister representing the Minister for the Environment and Water to table the documents regarding the proposed National Environmental Standard for First Nations engagement and participation by no later than 14 March 2024,

(ii) in a letter of response tabled on 18 March 2024, the Minister stated that 'work is underway to compile the documents' and proposed to table the documents on 11 April 2024, and

(iii) it has now been over a month since the extended tabling date and the order has still not been complied with;

(b) orders that, unless order no. 481 is complied with in full by midday on 16 May 2024, the Minister representing the Minister for the Environment and Water be required to attend the Senate after question time on 16 May 2024 to provide an explanation, of no more than 5 minutes, of the failure to comply with the order, and that:

(i) any senator may move to take note of the explanation, and

(ii) any such motion may be debated for no longer than 30 minutes, shall have precedence over all other business until determined, and senators may speak to the motion for not more than 5 minutes each.
